Session 15 - EPILOGUE

PCs: Garreth, Markus

The intrepid party descends into the ancient, echoing halls of the mausoleum, their breath catching in their throats as they sense the dark presence of Azrahel-Koth awaiting their arrival. The air is thick with foreboding, but they press on, their resolve unyielding. Suddenly, from the shadows, the Herald of Sathmog emerges, his eyes burning with malice and his voice a dark incantation of doom.

With a roar of defiance, the heroes engage in a fierce and harrowing battle, the clash of steel and the flare of magic lighting the gloom. The Herald's sinister power tests their limits, but their unity and bravery prevail. With a final, thunderous strike, they shatter his form, banishing the malevolent spirit to the abyss from whence it came.

Victory won and evil vanquished, the party makes their way out of the oppressive catacombs, hearts pounding with triumph and relief. As they step into the light of the outside world, they are met with a sight of breathtaking awe—a mighty dragon, its scales glinting like molten metal, stands before them. The ground trembles beneath its weight, and its eyes blaze with ancient wisdom and untold power, heralding the next chapter of their epic saga.

Epilogue

The first thing you notice as you step out into the daylight is that the demonic mist has been driven from the area. You gaze out over a bleak and barren island, surrounded by the black waters of Mirror Lake and littered with twisted bodies.

Then you see the dragon – a majestic creature with shimmering green scales and enormous wings. It is perched on a rock some twenty meters in front of you, staring at you with cold, reptilian eyes. Feeling small and insignificant, you are gripped by a strong impulse to bow before the winged beast.

“I thank you, friends,” rumbles the dragon in a thunderous, commanding voice: “You have saved the light and the cleansing fire. The three-tongued one was stopped at the threshold of his world, and Um-Durman is once again in safe hands.”

The dragon spreads its mighty wings and takes to the air with a few swift beats. It leaves you with a final message before disappearing from view – a telepathic hiss that seems to fill your souls and demand that you bow to a higher power:

“The time of the great cleansing is nigh. Eledain awaits his sword. He awaits his faithful servants. He will summon you when the time is right.”

The End.

Session 14

PCs: Garreth, Markus, Aino, Shadowfang

the ghost

The party gathers their allies for the final battle against Azrahel Koth. Joining them are a scouting party from Outskirt, a band of orcs from the Maladuk clan, and Alfilia with her dragon knights. Shadowfang also persuades the giant Glam-Glam to join their quest.

The expedition travels to Mirror Lake, where they spot the Isle of Mist in the distance, surrounded by corrosive fumes. With protection granted by Um-Durmam, they cross the lake on rafts and reach the island.

On the island, the only landmark is an altar holding the corpse of a follower of Sathmog. When the heroes remove his amulet, his ghost appears and attacks, but they quickly destroy the undead spirit.

The demon Akrae

While exploring the island, they discover an underwater entrance leading to a network of tunnels. In these tunnels, they easily slay a fearsome troll but face a tougher challenge in a crab-like demon summoned by Azrahel Koth. Several orcs fall in the battle, but the heroes ultimately triumph.

Descending to a lower level, they leave the rocky caverns for a marble-tiled labyrinth. Here, they avoid traps by solving the riddles associated with them. They then encounter the demon Khaa, who offers to spare them from combat if they solve three riddles. The heroes successfully answer all the riddles and are allowed to proceed.

The party then faces a deadly water trap where Markus nearly loses his life. Fortunately, his comrades manage to save him just in time.

The party ventures further into Oracle Cave, braving its depths with determination. Negotiating a precarious bridge crafted from intricate webs, they arrive at the lair of the Spider Mother, a colossal arachnid known as Saak'shal, who holds a child captive.

In a bid to secure the child's release, the party strikes a bargain with the intelligent spider, offering a sheep in exchange. Though the deal is struck, doubts linger about the safety of leaving the menacing spider unchecked. Ultimately, they opt to confront Saak'shal, engaging in a grueling battle that ends with the spider's demise and the exploration of her hoarded treasures.

With the rescued child in tow, the party returns to Outskirt, where they make final preparations for their journey to the Isle of Mist. There, they intend to confront the ominous presence of Azrahel Koth and vanquish the dark power looming over the land.

In Outskirt, amidst the rugged wilderness, the party encounters Thistle, a spirited young halfling hunter yearning for excitement. Eager for adventure, Thistle eagerly joins their ranks, serving as their knowledgeable guide through the enigmatic Misty Vale to their next destination.

Their journey leads them to Oracle Cave, a reputed site steeped in tales of dark rituals and human offerings. Here, they encounter a band of orcs led by Agra, faithful followers of the orc chieftain Maladuk. The orcs harbor no hostility towards the party.

Venturing into the depths of the cave, the party confronts a menacing horde of monstrous spiders infesting its shadows. Amidst a fierce battle against a swarm of spiderlings, tragedy strikes as Thistle falls, sacrificing his life to fend off the relentless onslaught. Despite the loss, the party valiantly overcomes the arachnid threat, albeit with heavy hearts.

As they regroup by the warmth of the orc campfire for respite, their solitude is interrupted by the arrival of Aino, a resolute wolfkin hunter on a personal vendetta against the monstrous mother spider that ravaged his kin. After a few days of respite and training in the tranquil Outskirt, the party ventures forth to Blackridge village, driven by curiosity to unravel the enigmatic aura shrouding the hamlet.

Upon arrival, they become ensnared within the confines of an ancient curse, ensnaring the village in an eternal recurrence of the fateful day when the dragon emperor exacted vengeance upon the treacherous mage Kato.

Undeterred, the party delves into the heart of the mystery, navigating the labyrinthine alleys until they confront Kato himself within the confines of his towering sanctuary. The aged wizard beseeches them urgently, directing their attention to a weathered scroll resting upon the cold stone floor.

It is then that Ix, a demon bound to Kato's bidding, materializes to thwart their efforts and ensure the perpetuation of the curse. Yet, with swift determination, the party seizes the scroll before Ix can intervene, consigning it to the flames of the hearth.

As the ancient parchment turns to ash, the oppressive veil of the curse is shattered, freeing Blackridge village from its temporal prison. In the wake of their triumph, Ix, consumed by wrath, vows vengeance upon the intrepid adventurers.

Session 10

PCs: Garreth, Markus, Shadowfang, Thekla

Back in Outskirt, the party encounters Thekla, a scholarly dwarf recently arrived from the mountains. Fascinated by their next adventure, Thekla eagerly joins their ranks.

Their journey leads them to the Road's End Inn, drawn by rumors of peculiar disappearances. Amidst the cozy ambiance of the inn, they mingle with fellow guests, engaging in conversation over drinks. Yet, an insidious lethargy descends upon them, signaling imminent danger. Suddenly, the very structure of the inn seems to warp and contract, plunging them into darkness.

Awakening in an eerie underground chamber, they realize they've been ensnared in a sinister dream realm. As they traverse this twisted landscape, they encounter fragments of others' memories, woven into the fabric of the nightmare.

Their investigation unveils a tragic tale: Stare, an embittered soothsayer from the Haunted Marshes, wrongly accused of a child's abduction, met a grim fate. Locked away with her loyal dogs beneath the inn, she succumbed to despair and hunger.

In a vengeful fury, Stare cursed the inn, ensnaring unwitting guests in her spectral web, transforming the once-peaceful refuge into a realm of torment after nightfall.

Tracking down Stare and her spectral hounds, the party confronts the twisted remnants of her once-human form. Despite their efforts to reason with her, the specter is consumed by rage, leading to a harrowing battle that tests their resolve.

With Stare vanquished and her curse lifted, they free themselves and the trapped souls, dispelling the nightmarish realm. Peace is restored, and the inn is freed from the grip of Stare's malevolent legacy.

The party embarks on a journey to Fort Malus, where they encounter Ossiar, a learned scholar accompanying an expedition led by Dragon Knights and assisted by Adventurers. Their mission: to investigate rumors surrounding a legendary magic tree said to bear golden apples capable of sustaining a person for a week.

Upon their arrival at the fort, they discover that the knights have apprehended an elven woman named Iliel, accusing her of trespassing. Hindered by a mystical barrier blocking their path, the knights resort to digging into the cellar in search of a solution.

The party intervenes, freeing Iliel, who discloses the existence of a dormant spirit within the cellar—a spirit with the power to restore the magic of the fabled golden apples. Unraveling a cryptic inscription, they unlock the enigmatic door, gaining access to the hidden depths.

Within the cellar, they encounter Rotlaug, a nature spirit ensnared by the former occupants of the fort. Negotiating with Rotlaug, the party strikes a deal to liberate the spirit from its captivity. Session 8

PCs: Garreth, Markus, Shadowfang

As the party makes their way back to Outskirt, an unsettling phenomenon occurs: frogs begin to plummet from the sky, a grim portent of the encroaching influence of the demon lord Sathmog.

Upon their return to Outskirt, their destination is the Old Temple, where they intend to place the meticulously assembled statuette upon the altar. This act reveals a concealed passageway leading to a crypt shrouded in secrecy. Within this crypt lies Um-Durman, the legendary sword of Emperor Eledain, renowned for its prowess in vanquishing demons.

Their exploration takes a tragic turn when they stumble upon a demon in the act of slaying the venerable Dranath. The valiant heroes confront the demonic entity, ultimately triumphing over its malevolent presence.

After paying their respects with a proper burial for Dranath, the party takes respite, utilizing the ensuing days for recuperation and honing their skills in preparation for their journey to the Troll's Spire.

The Spire stands as a derelict tower, harboring surprises and challenges for those brave enough to venture within. Upon their arrival, they are met with the unexpected sight of a mutated frog, grotesquely enlarged, and fiercely aggressive. Further exploration reveals the presence of Harga, an enigmatic figure with troll-like features, possessing a keen intellect and a proficiency in alchemy. Through an unlikely alliance, Shadowfang establishes rapport with Harga, who imparts crucial information: a hidden trove lies beneath the tower's depths, guarded by ancient undead sentinels.

Descending into the lower levels, the party engages in a harrowing battle against the spectral guardians, emerging victorious and claiming the treasures they safeguarded—a modest cache of gems and gold. With their mission accomplished, they return to Harga, their newfound ally, to share their spoils and further their quest.

Garreth and Markus hide inside Annabella's home, biding their time while a secret trapdoor unexpectedly opens. From it emerges Quasimund the mallard and his minions. They attempt to deceive the newcomers by claiming allegiance to Annabella, but their facade crumbles quickly. A skirmish ensues, and Garreth and Markus swiftly dispatch Quasimund's lackeys.

As evening falls, Annabella returns, prompting the party to capture and interrogate her. She confesses to being a cultist of Sathmog and reveals the location of the final piece of the dragon emperor statuette at Bothild's Lode. Turning to Alfilia for guidance, the party finds no mercy for the cultist, and Alfilia executes her without hesitation.

The next day, Garreth, Markus, and Alfilia journey to Bothild's Lode, currently under the control of a warband of orcs. Negotiating an alliance with the orc leader, Maladuk, they gain permission to explore the mines in search of the statuette's piece.

Deep within the mines, they encounter the ghost of Queen Bothild, who offers to guide them in exchange for vengeance against the fearsome White Death, a gigantic albino watersnake that claimed her life. Among the treasures within the burial chamber, they discover a mystical crown warding against demonic forces and the elusive third fragment of the statuette they sought. With their mission fulfilled, they return to Outskirt to recuperate.

In the tranquil town of Outskirt, the party recuperates from their recent expedition, seeking respite from their adventures. However, their peace is shattered when an eerie solar eclipse casts a pall of dread over the townsfolk. Recognizing the unnatural phenomenon, the party turns to the dilapidated temple at the town's heart in search of guidance.

Within the temple's crumbling halls, they encounter the enigmatic Dranath, a sage steeped in mystic lore. Dranath shares tales of Sathmog's defeat and warns of sinister cultists conspiring to resurrect the malevolent entity. The party spends time at the temple, with Shadowfang mastering the ritual needed to seal the portal. Once prepared, he unleashes the spell, permanently closing the portal.

Returning to Outskirt, they rest and sell their acquired loot. Markus crafts a brand new longsword for Garreth. With some of their funds, they purchase a cart and a donkey, anticipating their future expeditions.

Hearing rumors about the Tower of Sighs in the nearby marshes, the party plans their next venture. They decide to leave the cart behind in Outskirt, realizing its impracticality in the swamp.

En route to the tower, they halt at a local farm for the night and unexpectedly encounter a boar the following day, providing them with a hearty meal.

At the Tower of Sighs, they confront a group of bandits led by Ursic, a scarred woman, who claim the tower is guarded by a giant preventing access to its treasures.

Taking the initiative, the party negotiates with the giant, Glam-Glam, convincing him to allow them a glimpse of the treasure in exchange for a lavish feast of marsh fish.

Descending to the tower's lower level, they discover a chamber strewn with orc skeletons and an altar holding another piece of the sought-after statuette. Additionally, they recover an ancient war-banner significant to the orcs.

Leaving the lower level, they bid farewell to the giant, disappointing the gathered bandits who anticipated riches. On their journey back to Outskirt, the bandits ambush them, resulting in a fierce battle where the party emerges victorious, sparing only one bandit.

Returning to Outskirt, they sell the bandits' weapons and take respite to replenish their supplies.

Within the temple's courtyard, they encounter Hafarmal, an aged elf harnessing the growth-inducing energy emanating from a portal. Persuading him to join their expedition, they delve into the temple's secrets.

In an adjacent altar room, a concealed hatch reveals a mysterious Bone Mask. As they descend further, a fierce battle with a monstrous manticore unfolds, resulting in the tragic demise of Hafarmal. Retreating to the upper level, the party regroups.

PCs: Garreth, Markus, Shadowfang

Garreth, the valiant human knight, and Markus, the skilled elven artisan, traverse the treacherous Drakmar Pass when their journey takes an unexpected turn. A wounded figure lies on the road, mortally injured by an arrow. Summoning the last of his strength, the old man bequeaths them a fragment of a statuette along with cryptic words urging them to "continue in his search" before succumbing to his injuries.

The duo's moment of grief is abruptly interrupted by an ambush orchestrated by goblins, led by a formidable worg rider. Despite the formidable challenge, Garreth and Markus prevail after a strenuous struggle, overcoming the assailants. Undeterred, they press on through the pass and finally arrive at the town of Outskirt. After a short conversation, the captain of the guard lets them in.

Seeking answers, they make inquiries at the Three Stags inn, where they're welcomed by Vagnhild and Annabella. The two women reveal that the old man had lodged there. Opting to rent the same room (after forging a brand new key at the local smithy), the adventurers unveil a startling revelation— the deceased was a cultist devoted to the ancient demon lord, Sathmog. The deceased's journals disclose a sinister quest to unearth ancient artifacts in the Misty Valley, intending to herald the return of his dark master.

Retreating to the common room to deliberate on their findings, the adventurers encounter Shadowfang, a wolfkin mage with knowledge of the Misty Valley. Recognizing the dire nature of the quest, Shadowfang, seasoned in the mystic arts, offers to join their party. His expertise makes him an invaluable ally as they embark on the perilous quest to retrieve the missing pieces of the statuette and thwart the resurgence of the malevolent Sathmog.
